Canada is home to some of the greatest environmental advocates in the world. Yet a shockingly small number of these remarkable citizens have ever been honoured for their important contributions to Canada.

Did you know?

  • Less than 15 Canadians have ever been awarded the Order of Canada for efforts to protect the environment – that’s less than 0.3% of all 5604 awards given since 1967.
  • Thirty five times as many Orders of Canada have been given for those working in field of “industry, commerce, and business”.
  • The Order of British Columbia has been awarded to 275 people, of whom only five have been environmental advocates - less than 2%.
  • No one in east of Manitoba has ever been honoured with a provincial order for their contributions as an environmental activist.

Why? Perhaps because these awards are based on nomination – unless someone’s name is put forward by their colleagues, they cannot be considered.

The Lorax Society is NOT suggesting whom you should nominate – that is for you to decide. But the environmental community needs to better recognize the heroes in our midst and nominate more of our colleagues for these awards. This site will help you do that.

Please take the time to review the resources on this website and consider nominating a colleague for recognition as fine example of what a citizen should be.

If you have nominated an environmental activist in the past and they haven’t won, we want to know about it. Also if there are errors or omissions in the information on this site please contact us.
